Aulonocara jacobfreibergi is offered in different colour varieties.
Young species all look alike, they all have the same female brown stripe.
But when they grow older, and when the males start to color, males
are easy to detect by their colour and larger fins.
I have a group of "Eureka" in my aquarium. They love to be between the rocks,
but they mainly live at the edge of rocky areas. It is an Aulonocara
type that is rather be able against the territorial behaviour of the "Mbuna"
than other Aulonocara types.
About two years ago, I placed seven young fish in my aquarium. They were
two males and five females. The males in my aquarium were about 12 cm when I decided to remove one of them, because they were fighting and became more intolerant every day against eachother. They were showing their most beautiful
colours when they fought, though. Nowadays (september 2008) I have one male and three females in my tank and now they behave reasonable tolerant. Against other inhabitants, they behave peaceful, except in mating time. Then the male will chase any fish away that comes too close to his territory. I also have found some youngs between the rocks of this species.
